HC Deb 16 November 1937 vol 329 c229W
Mr. Groves

asked the Home Secretary whether he will make inquiries into the case of John Burrett, who was arrested on the charge of receiving bets in the street, complied with the request of the constable to keep his hands from his pockets, and, when searched, was found to possess no betting slips whatever, but was fined 20S.; and whether, as this young man has never been previously charged, he will remit this sentence?

Mr. Lloyd

The charge against this man was not one of receiving bets in the street, but of loitering in a street for the purpose of betting. After hearing the evidence the magistrate decided to convict and imposed a fine of £5, but after considering representations made by the defendant he reduced the fine to £2. This fine has been paid and my right hon. Friend can find no ground for recommending that any part of it should be remitted.
