HC Deb 10 November 1937 vol 328 c1796W
Mr. Thorne

asked the Home Secretary whether he can give the House any information in connection with the four men injured when the lift—cage taking them down the new tube railway shaft at Spital Square, Stepney, fell to the bottom?

Mr. Lloyd

A report has been received which shows that this accident occurred on Sunday last when the hoist was not in service and no driver was on duty. Satisfactory ladders arid intermediate landing platforms are provided for the men to gain access to their work, but on this occasion the injured men persuaded an unauthorised person to lower them on the hoist and he did so in a dangerous way forbidden by the contractors.
