HC Deb 10 November 1937 vol 328 c1785W
Mr. Tinker

asked the Minister of Transport whether his department have examined the question of laying the electricity wires underground instead of carrying it overhead by the pylon system; and will he state what is the objection?

Mr. Burgin

Yes, Sir, this matter has been frequently considered. The objection is that electrical development would be seriously hampered by reason of the great disparity in costs which in ordinary cases is found to exist between underground and overhead transmission and distribution.
