asked the Minister of Transport whether he will state the total payments which have now been ma de by way of grants out of the Road Fund in putting into operation the five-year road improvement plan of £100,000,000 which was announced on behalf of His Majesty's Government in November, 1935?

Mr. Burgin

Payments made out of the Road Fund up to 30th September, 1937, in respect of grants for schemes in the Highway Authorities' five-year programmes amount to £8¾ millions. In addition approximately £500,000 has been paid out of the Fund during the current financial year in respect of schemes on Trunk Roads, originally included by the authorities in their programmes, for which I assumed responsibility on 1st April last.
