HC Deb 03 November 1937 vol 328 c957W
Mr. Anderson

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air why it has been decided to establish a munitions depot near Cheltenham, in Gloucestershire, when suitable sites are available in the special area of West Cumberland where an abundance of suitable labour is available; and is he aware that no Government factory has as yet been established in the special area mentioned?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

There has been no decision to establish a munitions depot near Cheltenham; what is in contemplation is an equipment depot in that area. A site in West Cumberland would not have met the strategic requirements. As regards the last part of the question I am sorry that it has not been found possible to site any of the Air Ministry factories in the area referred to by the hon. Member but I can assure him that the relative advantages of the area have not been overlooked.
