HC Deb 03 November 1937 vol 328 cc936-7W
Mr. R. Robinson

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been called to the dangerous road surface in Berkeley Square, London; whether he is aware that this particular type of road surface occurs elsewhere and proves a source of danger; and whether he will circularise local authorities with a view to rendering the surface, where it exists, less dangerous, and refraining from using it in future road construction?

Mr. Burgin

I have had inquiries made with regard to the road surface in Berkeley Square and am informed that part of the western carriageway was relaid in 1935 with wood blocks; the south side was relaid in September last. The Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis has reported no accidents in the Square during the last 12 months, and the few minor mishaps which have occurred cannot be attributed to the road surface. In these circumstances I see no reason to circularise local authorities on the lines suggested by the hon. Member.
