HC Deb 25 March 1937 vol 321 c3100W
Mr. McEntee

asked the Lord President of the Council which of those countries participating in the International Sugar Conference have in operation schemes to ensure to their producers a price for sugar in excess of the world price; and if he can state what that price is in each case?

Mr. R. MacDonald

As regards the first part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which I gave to the hon. Member for Stourbridge (Mr. Morgan) on 18th March. I am not able to say what price is secured by producers in each of the countries within this category.

Lieut.-Colonel Sandeman Allen

asked the Lord President of the Council whether, in view of the recent increase in the price of sugar, the rapid reduction in world stocks of sugar, and the fact that Great Britain is still dependent upon foreign sources for a large proportion of her sugar supplies, he will now reconsider the decision, which he recently announced, that it will be the policy of the British delegation to the International Sugar Conference to limit production within the British Empire?

Mr. R. MacDonald

The factors to which my hon. and gallant Friend draws attention were already known to His Majesty's Government when the decision he mentions was taken, and I do not think that any reconsideration is necessary.
