HC Deb 18 March 1937 vol 321 c2285W
Mr. A. Herbert

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can give an approximate estimate of the total sum expended annually on betting in the United Kingdom; and whether, in view of the increasing burden of taxation upon productive industry and the earnings of the people, he will prepare a plan for the effective imposition of a tax upon this indulgence?

Mr. Chamberlain

As regards the first part of the question, I regret that I have no information which would enable me to furnish an estimate of the total sum expended annually on betting. The suggestion made in the second part has been noted.
