HC Deb 16 March 1937 vol 321 cc1871-2W
Sir W. Davison

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the number of passengers who travelled by sea from the Irish Free State to the United Kingdom in 1936 exceeded those who travelled in a reverse direction by about 29,000; and what action is being taken by the Government to see that these immigrants are not given employment in Great Britain at the expense of unemployed British workers who are excluded from direct employment in the Irish Free State by regulations made under the Control of Manufacturers Act recently passed in the Dail?

Mr. E. Brown

The number of passengers is as stated by my hon. Friend; but it should not be assumed that it represents the number of additional residents in Great Britain. As regards the latter part of the question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given to him on 28th April last, by the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs.
