HC Deb 02 March 1937 vol 321 cc190-2W
Mr. W. John Stewart

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the total amount of subsidies or grants which have been paid, or will become payable, during the present financial year, the amount of such subsidies or grants to local authorities, companies, or associations of any kind, and the amount, if any, which will be payable to Northern Ireland; and the total moneys which have been guaranteed for any purpose to steamship companies, railway companies, or other companies or corporations of any kind, whether public or private, and for which moneys the Exchequer is liable under guarantee at the present time?

Mr. Chamberlain

Information as to subsidies and grants will be found in the Annual Estimates and information as to guarantees will be found in the Annual Finance Accounts. The amount payable to Northern Ireland is shown separately in certain cases: in other cases the information required to separate expenditure in Northern Ireland from expenditure in other parts of the United Kingdom is not available. Accordingly I fear that the preparation of a detailed statement of the kind which I understand my hon. Friend to desire would not be practicable.
