§
Mr. Ernest Brown
, pursuant to his reply (OFFICIAL REPORT, 29th January, 1937; cols. 1202–3, Vol. 319), supplied the following statement:
Statistics of employment and unemployment among insured persons are not available for local authority areas. In the following table the figures relative to the total population in the areas named in the First Schedule to the Special Areas (Development and Improvement) Act, 1934, are in most cases those given in the relevant reports of the Registrars-General in respect of mid-1935.
For persons insured under the Unemployment Insurance Acts statistics can be given only in respect of Employment Exchanges, and the areas served by these offices are not co-terminous with local authority areas. For the purpose of the table, however, Employment Exchanges have been arranged so as to indicate as nearly as possible the position in the Special Areas mainly served by them, and in some cases grouping of both Special Areas and Employment Exchanges has been necessary for this purpose.
The extent to which differences occur between the local authority areas and the areas served by particular exchanges, or groups of exchanges, varies as between one area and another, and it is necessary to bear this in mind in making comparisons between the figures for total population and those in respect of insured persons.
