HC Deb 17 February 1937 vol 320 c1192W
Major Procter

asked the Minister of Transport what approximate proportion of the £31,000,000 derived during 1935–36 from licence duties on mechanically-propelled road vehicles was obtained, respectively, from the users of private and commercial road vehicles?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

Forty-eight per cent. from private vehicles and 52 per cent. from commercial.

Lieut.-Colonel Sandeman Allen

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that an unemployed vehicle driver seeking employment as the driver of a heavy goods vehicle is at a great disadvantage through being required to provide a vehicle on which to pass the test for a licence to drive a heavy goods vehicle; and whether a regulation will be made to overcome the difficulty by permitting a provisional licence to drive a heavy goods vehicle to be issued to an experienced driver who holds a licence entitling him to drive a light goods vehicle?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

I am glad to be able to tell my hon. and gallant Friend that since the first of last month the facility which I understand him to desire has existed.
