HC Deb 11 February 1937 vol 320 cc614-5W
Mr. Gibbins

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that groundsmen in Liverpool, when unemployed, are not allowed benefit for any more than three children, and when insurance benefit is exhausted they are not allowed assistance from the Unemployment Assistance Board, but are compelled to seek relief from the public assistance committee; and whether he will take steps to remedy the position of these men?

Mr. E. Brown

I presume that the hon. Member has in mind the provision in the Agricultural Unemployment Insurance Act that the weekly rate of benefit must not exceed 30s. and the provision that prior to the Second Appointed Day agricultural workers cannot claim assistance from the Unemployment Assistance Board. These provisions are Statutory, but the second of them ceases to be operative on the Second Appointed Day, which will be the 1st April next.
