Mr. Lambert

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will state the numbers employed on the 22nd May, 1933, and on the 15th November, 1937?

Mr. E. Brown

Statistics of persons in employment are compiled by my Department only in respect of persons aged 16–64 insured under the Unemployment Insurance Acts. The estimated number of such persons in employment in Great Britain was 9,617,000 at 22nd May, 1933, and 11,573,000 at 15th November, 1937. The latter figure excludes persons within the agricultural scheme, and in compiling it the number of unemployed insured persons aged 16–64 has been ascertained in accordance with the revised procedure introduced in September, 1937. At that date the change reduced the figure for the number of insured persons recorded as unemployed by about 44,000.
