asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air whether he will give the names of the Government-nominated directors of Imperial Airways, Limited, since the beginning, the salaries paid, and the periods of service?

The replies to the first and last parts of the question are as follows:

  • Sir Herbert Hambling, 23rd June, 1924–19th January, 1931.
  • Major J. W. Hills, 23rd June, 1924–18th December, 1925.
  • Air Vice-Marshal Sir Vyell Vyvyan, 8th December, 1925–31st March, 1933.
  • Sir Walter F. Nicholson, 20th January, 1931–16th July, 1937.
  • Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir John M. Salmond, 22nd May, 1933 (still serving).
  • Sir Francis L. Joseph, 17th July, 1937 (still serving).

In regard to the second part of the question, the remuneration of the Government directors on the board of Imperial Airways, Limited, is not payable from public funds. It is included in the sum allocated by the company for the remuneration of the board of directors as a whole. This sum was £6,500 a year on the formation of the company in 1924, and was increased to £12,000 a year as from 1st April, 1935.
