HC Deb 02 December 1937 vol 329 cc2269-70W
Mr. Donner

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many Abyssinian refugees are known to have sought safety in the Sudan; and whether, in view of the fact that ample territory is available near the Sudanese-Abyssinian frontier, any arrangements are being made for their permanent settlement?

Viscount Cranborne

There are some 250 Abyssinian refugees in the Sudan. This number does not take account of normal trans-frontier movements by cognate negroid tribes common to both sides, which do not constitute in any sense a refugee problem. I cannot accept without reserve my hon. Freind's contention that there is ample territory available near the Sudanese-Abyssinian frontier suitable for the settlement of the refugees. In general the low-lying country of the Sudan is climatically unsuited to refugees from the highlands of Abyssinia.
