HC Deb 04 May 1936 vol 311 c1354W
Mr. MARKHAM

asked the President of the Board of Trade which countries have imposed restrictions on British ships carrying any part of their inter-coastal trade?

Dr. BURGIN

According to the information in my possession, the principal countries in which the coasting trade is reserved to national vessels and closed to British vessels are: France, Greece, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Turkey, Japan, United States of America and Argentina. Brazil and Chile, whilst reserving their coasting trades to national vessels, permit foreign vessels (including British vessels) to carry passengers between their ports.
