§ Mr. LOFTUSasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will consider making representations to the Government of the Union of South Africa with a view to the removal or reduction of the duty on kippered herrings, which was raised from 1¼d. to 2d. per pound in 1931 when Great Britain left the gold standard, especially in view of the greatly increased imports of South African fruits and wines since 1931?
§ Mr. RUNCIMANRepresentations were made by the United Kingdom industry some time ago to the Union authorities who considered that the position of the local industry would not warrant a reduction in the duty. I will keep the matter in mind in connection with any trade discussions that may take place in the future with the Union Government.
