HC Deb 02 March 1936 vol 309 c1016W
Mr. M. MacMILLAN

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can state the number of additional workers employed in the 26 new works established in Scotland during the past year and the number of workers displaced by the closing of the 18 other works; what numbers in each case are men and what number women; and how much juvenile labour is involved?

Dr. BURGIN

Complete information as to the employment afforded by the 26 new factories established in Scotland during 1935 is not yet available, but this information will be published in due course in the Survey of Industrial Development for 1935. It is not possible, however, to furnish employment figures for factories closed, which are comparable with the employment figures of the new factories opened, and the reports obtained for the purpose of the Survey do not distinguish precisely between male, female and juvenile labour.
