HC Deb 17 June 1936 vol 313 c1008W
Mr. WATKINS

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been directed to recent unprovoked assaults by the Fascists upon Jewish people in Hackney; and whether he will give further instructions to the police to ensure the safety of Jewish residents?

Mr. LLOYD

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis informs me that, since the 5th March, 1936, two complaints have been received by the police of assaults having been committed by Fascists on Jews in the vicinity of Hackney Downs. In each case the alleged assaults were trivial and no description of the assailants, other than that they were believed to be Blackshirts, could be given. As my right hon. Friend informed the House during the Debate on the 5th March, special steps have been taken and are being taken by the police to prevent or deal with assaults and indeed with any offensive conduct towards the Jews of a kind likely to lead to a breach of the peace and extra police have been detailed for this duty, both in Hackney and elsewhere.
