HC Deb 09 April 1936 vol 310 cc2963-4W
Mr. GALLACHER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he can give any information about the attitude of the Indian Government or Indian manufacturers to participation in the Leipzig Fair and to the completion of contracts entered into with German firms, such as the contract for the construction of the Howrah Bridge, in view of the resentment aroused in India by the references of the Chancellor of the German Reich to the coloured races?

Mr. BUTLER

The Indian Government did not take part in the Leipzig Fair this year and I understand that their decision, which was taken last year, was based on financial and economic considerations. I have heard no suggestion of any special action by Government or manufacturers with regard to contracts with German firms. As far as I am aware, the Howrah Bridge contract has not yet been allotted.
