HC Deb 02 July 1935 vol 303 c1715W
Wing-Commander JAMES

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office what regiments and corps are open for recruiting in Durham and Northumberland and the South Wales areas; how many recruits from these areas were obtained during the last three years; and whether more could have been taken had they been forthcoming?

Mr. HACKING

All regiments and corps are open for recruiting in the Durham, Northumberland and South Wales areas, including of course the county regiments associated with these areas. There is a deficit of recruits for the Army, and more from these areas would have been welcome had they been forthcoming. The number of recruits obtained for the Regular Army during the three years ended 31st March, from the areas in question were:

1932–33. 1933–34. 1934–35.
Durham Area 830 490 563
Northumberland Area. 648 747 1,039
South Wales Area 1,500 1,387 1,424
