HC Deb 02 May 1934 vol 289 cc320-1W
Mr. T. MORRIS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the grave situation in Liberia under the present administration, he will suggest to the Powers concerned the possibility of giving Germany a mandate over Liberia provided she returns to the League of Nations and accepts such mandate from the League?

Sir J. SIMON

This matter is not quite so simple as my hon. Friend supposes. I do not know to what Powers he refers as "the Powers concerned," and the Covenant of the League of Nations does not appear to contain any provision under which a State, member of the League of Nations, can, without its consent, be placed under the mandate of another Power.
