HC Deb 31 May 1933 vol 278 cc1885-6W
Mr. GROVES

asked the Minister of Health if he will cause inquiry to be made into the question of the use of paraldehyde in mental institutions and nursing homes; in how many instances hyoscine was administered as a sedative during the year 1931; and whether the use of croton oil has now been forbidden?

Sir H. YOUNG

During last year, a commissioner of the Board of Control made a special investigation of the use of sedatives in institutions for the insane in England and Wales, but the results are not yet available. For the year 1930 (the latest year for which statistics can at present be given), the average number of patients resident in institutions for the insane was 122,614, and the total quantity of hyoscine used was 851 grains. The use of croton oil has not been for- examination for sub-lieutenant (E) in February, 1933, of whom 13 qualified.

Mr. COCKS

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty the number and places where the first of the Fleet selection boards were held recently under the new scheme of lower-deck promotion to commissioned rank; the total number of candidates who were interviewed; and the number recommended for the petty officers' course at Devonport?

Sir B. EYRES MONSELL

The following statement gives the required information:

bidden, but the amount administered during 1930 was negligible.
