HC Deb 03 March 1933 vol 275 c700W
Mr. LAWSON

asked the Minister of Health the number of able-bodied unemployed persons now receiving public assistance, indoor and outdoor, respectively, in Great Britain?

Sir H. YOUNG:

The average number of unemployed persons registered at Employment Exchanges who were in receipt of outdoor relief in England and Wales in each week of January, 1933, was 135,040, excluding dependants. The Returns made to my Department do not distinguish the persons receiving institutional relief who are relieved on account of unemployment. As regards Scotland, I would refer the hon. Member to the Secretary of State.
