HC Deb 26 June 1933 vol 279 cc1173-4W
Sir J. HASLAM

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, seeing that British investors are suffering hardship by the continued delay in the readjustment of the tramway and ferry fares within the Leopoldina Terminal Company's area, he will cause representations to be made to the authorities of the State of Rio de Janeiro that His Majesty's Government would welcome an agreed settlement within the next few weeks?

Sir J. SIMON

As my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary informed my hon. Friend the Member for Chislehurst (Mr. Smithers) on 19th June, the competent authorities of the State of Rio de Janeiro have recoģnised the injustice of this company being obliged to operate public services at a loss, and a commission has been appointed to examine the company's books for the purpose of obtaining detailed proof that these losses have actually been incurred. Pending the result of this inquiry, I do not think that representations on the lines proposed would serve any useful purpose.
