HC Deb 20 July 1933 vol 46 cc169-70W
26. Mr. Garrett

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he proposes to bring forward new proposals for the reduction of battlefield nuclear weapons in Europe.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

As NATO Defence Ministers reaffirmed at their nuclear planning group meeting in March 1983, the size of NATO nuclear forces should be at the lowest level consistent with the Alliance's agreed deterrent strategy and no more nuclear weapons than are needed should be retained in NATO"s inventory. Against this background NATO's high level group is reviewing as a matter of priority the Alliance's requirenents for shorter range nuclear forces.
