HC Deb 06 July 1933 vol 280 cc515-6W
Sir T. ROSBOTHAM

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the need for the provision of sewers or sewage disposal works in many rural and urban districts in the country and in view of the powers conferred on county councils under Section 57 of the Local Government Act, 1929, to contribute towards the expenditure incurred in the provision or maintenance of any sewers or sewage disposal works, he will issue circular to county councils on the lines of Circular 1338, relating to rural water supplies, and urge that county councils should use their powers of contribution to the full for the assistance of well-considered schemes relating to sewers or sewage disposal works?

Sir H. YOUNG

I desire that every effort should be made by local authorities to carry out needed schemes of sewerage and sewage disposal. A number of county councils are already contributing towards the cost of schemes in rural and urban districts under the powers conferred on them by Section 57 of the Local Government Act, 1929, and I earnestly hope that in suitable cases all county councils will use their powers of contribution to the full. I do not think that a special circular on the subject is called for at the moment, but I will take other means of making the position known.
