HC Deb 21 December 1933 vol 284 cc1493-4W
Mr. G. MACDONALD

asked the President of the Board of Trade if, in connection with the recently concluded agreement between the Bombay millowners and the Lancashire textile delegation, measures are being taken by His Majesty's Government to increase the consumption of Indian cotton in this country; and if it is the intention of His Majesty's Government to appoint a trade adviser in India?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given on 11th December to the hon. Member for the Platting Division (Mr. Chorlton) regarding the committee which has been set up in Lancashire to promote the greater use of Indian cotton in this country. With regard to the second part of the question, I understand that this committee has under active consideration a suggestion that the cotton industry should appoint a representative in India whose duty it would be to establish liaison between the cotton spinners of this country and the cotton growers of India.
