HC Deb 21 December 1933 vol 284 c1485W
Duchess of ATHOLL

asked the Secretary of State for India when and on what grounds British recruitment for the Customs Service in India was transferred from the control of the Secretary of State in Council to that of the High Commissioner for India; whether this transference involves any alteration in the percentage of British to be recruited for the Customs Service; and, if so, of what the alteration consists?

Sir S. HOARE

British recruitment for the Indian Customs Service was transferred to the control of the Government of India in 1925 on the grounds that detailed control by the Secretary of State in Council of a Service largely recruited in India was no longer necessary, and that the Europeans required could be recruited by the Government of India through the High Commissioner for India. The transfer of control did not involve any alteration in the percentage of British officers to be obtained by direct recruitment.
