HC Deb 25 November 1932 vol 272 c367W
Mr. MORGAN JONES

asked the Home Secretary whether the large quantities of tickets in the Irish Free State hospitals sweepstake, which were recently seized at Liverpool, were seized on his direction; and whether he can make a statement on the present attitude of his Department towards sweepstakes conducted outside this country?

Sir J. GILMOUR

Recent seizures of packets containing tickets relating to the sweepstake mentioned were effected by Customs officers under their statutory powers: in reply to the second part of the question, the sale in this country of tickets in any sweepstake is illegal, and it is the duty of the authorities to take such steps as are open to them to enforce the law.
