HC Deb 21 December 1932 vol 273 cc1100-1W
Mr. T. GRIFFITHS

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many grants of Crown land have been made in Kenya between 1st January, 1912, and 1st January, 1932, to Europeans and to Africans, respectively; and what are the total areas involved in the two classes?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

I am not in a position to state the number of grants, which could only be ascertained after exhaustive search. Apart from the native reserves, the total area of the grants of Crown land in the period in question is 3,806,510 acres, subject to adjustments in respect of surrenders, reversions, etc. The figures do not enable me to distinguish the proportion of grants made to Europeans. The area of the reserves secured to the natives by Ordinance is approximately 31,000,000 acres. According to the latest information in my possession, no individual grants of Crown land have been made to members of the African tribes for which reserves have been gazetted. Grants at the Coast have been made to Arabs, Somalis and others, but particulars could again only be obtained by exhaustive search.
