asked the Home Secretary what was the total amount expended by the Government and local authorities on the police force in England and Wales in the financial years 1912–13 and 1930–31, respectively; and what was the total number of ex-police pensioners, and the total cost of their pensions in both of those years?

The total net cost of police falling upon the Exchequer and local rates respectively was £2,655,348 and £4,154,638 for 1912–13, and is estimated at £10,637,925 and £10,905,121 for 1930–31. The total cost of pensions (including widows' pensions and children's allowances) was £1,304,118 for 1912–13 and is estimated at £5,046,597 for 1930–31. On 31st March, 1931, 33,037 ex-police officers were in receipt of pensions; the corresponding figure for 1912–13 is not available.
