HC Deb 24 September 1931 vol 256 c1832W
Commander BELLAIRS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what will be the taxation per head in this country in a full year under present taxation proposals as compared with the latest available figures for France, Germany, Italy and the United States?

Mr. P. SNOWDEN

The taxation per head in this country in a full year under the proposals in the Finance Bill will be £16 7s. 1d. The latest available figures for the other countries named are as follow:

Taxation per head. = £ at par.
£ s. d.
France 1243 francs 10 0 2
Germany 143.45 Reichsmarks 7 0 5
Italy 414 lire 4 9 6
U.S.A. $28.76 5 18 0

In the case of Germany and the United States of America the figures refer only to Federal taxes, and local taxation is excluded in all cases. For this and other reasons, the figures are not strictly comparable.
