HC Deb 24 September 1931 vol 256 cc1832-3W
Mr. EDE

asked the Secretary for Mines the number of wage-earners employed at the Harton, St. Hilda and Westoe, Boldon and Whitburn pits, respectively, of the Harton Coal Company, South Shields, for each week of the last 12 months for which figures are available?

Mr. FOOT

I am sending the hon. Member the information desired, which involves a very long tabular statement.

Mr. EDE

asked the Secretary for Mines the number of wage-earners employed at the Harton, St. Hilda and Westoe, Boldon and Whitburn pits, respectively, of the Harton Coal Company, South Shields, on the dates in 1919, 1920, 1921, and 1922 which correspond to 12th September, 1931?

Mr. FOOT

The only information available for these years relates to the number of persons ordinarily employed during the year and is as follows:

Name of Pit. 1919. 1920. 1921. 1922.
Harton 3,321 3,315 3,406 2,957
St. Hilda and Westoe. 2,909 3,095 3,033 2,727
Boldon 2,820 2,992 2,929 3,163
Whitburn 3,213 3,360 3,497 3,565

These figures are not strictly comparable with those given to the hon. Member on 16th September for the years 1923 to 1931, as they include clerks and salaried persons and do not relate to a specific date.
