HC Deb 19 November 1931 vol 259 c1024W
Mr. HAMMERSLEY

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) if he can make a statement of the Government's intention in connection with the reorganisation of the Lancashire cotton trade;

(2) if he will issue a statement summarising the progress made up to the present in the reorganisation of the Lancashire cotton trade?

Major COLVILLE

The position in regard to the cotton industry is receiving close attention, but I do not think that any statement I could make at the present time would serve any useful purpose. As my hon. Friend is aware, the joint committee are now examining proposals for the adjustment of productive capacity to demand. My right hon. Friend has already had an opportunity of meeting representatives of the joint committee, and I understand that he expects to hear from them again in due course.
