HC Deb 04 May 1931 vol 252 cc40-1W
Miss RATHBONE

asked the Postmaster-General if he is aware that the cost of a licence to the owners of wireless sets is the same whether the owner possesses one crystal set or several valve sets; and whether he will consider the advisability of adjusting the charge in proportion to the privileges enjoyed?

Mr. ATTLEE

There are at present more than 3,600,000 wireless licences in force, and it is essential that the licensing system shall be kept as simple as possible. Any arrangement under which the amount of the licence fee depended on the type of apparatus employed, or the number of sets used in the same household, would introduce many difficulties; and I do not consider that such a change would be in the public interest.
