HC Deb 04 March 1931 vol 249 c412W
Captain P. MACDONALD

asked the Minister of Transport what assistance has been given by the Government to road development schemes in the Isle of Wight; and how many men are employed on such schemes as a result of Government assistance?

Mr. HERBERT MORRISON

Grants amounting approximately to £14,000 have been made in respect of 16 schemes of improvement estimated to cost approximately £22,200 on classified roads and bridges in the Isle of Wight since 1st June, 1929; on 30th January, 1931, 77 men were directly employed on these works. On the assumption that the expenditure of £1,000,000 provides 24,000 men-months of direct employment, these schemes are estimated to provide 533 men-months of direct employment.
