§ Mr. GREENWOODThe amount expended by Poor Law authorities in England and Wales during the financial year ended 31st March, 1929, on relief of the poor and purposes connected therewith (other than out of loans for capital purposes) was £39,670,895, of which about 84 per cent. was payable out of rates. The corresponding figures for the financial year ended 31st March, 1930, are estimated to be £39,250,000 and 81 per cent.
