Mr. L. SMITH

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware of the decrease in the acreage to be placed under sugar beet in the coming season owing to the uncertainty as to the intentions of the Government with regard to the industry; and whether he proposes, before the House rises, to make a statement of Government policy on this matter, so that farmers may be enabled to make arrangements without delay in respect of next year's crops?

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. The question of the future of the beet sugar industry will continue to receive my earnest consideration, but I must make it quite clear at once that there can be no question of repeating the special assistance by way of extra subsidy which was afforded by the British Sugar Industry (Assistance) Act, 1931
