HC Deb 08 May 1930 vol 238 cc1148-9W
Mr. FREEMAN

asked the Secretary of State for India how many children, per 1,000, born in India die during their first year; and to what extent this is estimated to be due to the effects of opium?

Mr. BENN

The rate per 1,000 of deaths of children under one year old in 1927 (the latest year for which figures are available) are:

Males 174.1
Females 159.30

I am not aware of any attempt having been made to estimate to what extent, if any, this death rate is due to the effects of opium.
