HC Deb 06 May 1930 vol 238 c773W
Mr. FREEMAN

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he has received any Report from the Bengal or Central Government with regard to the riots consequent upon the carters' strike in Calcutta on 1st April last; and, if not, whether he will cause inquiries to be made into the shooting by the police that took place on that occasion?

Mr. BENN

I have received reports on these occurrences from which I am satisfied that both the police in dealing with the actual riot, and, later, the Commissioner of Police in conferring with the carters' leaders and preventing a recurrence of the disorder, acted with great restraint and discretion in a very difficult situation.
