HC Deb 04 February 1930 vol 234 c1701W
Viscountess ASTOR

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he will consider the desirability of arranging for the promotion of storehousemen in victualling yards or dockyards to the rank of storehouse-keeper in future by competitive examination instead of, as at present, by seniority?

Mr. AMMON

There is no grade of storehouse-keeper in the victualling yards or dockyards. Storehousemen, who are entered by examination, are eligible for promotion by selection to the rank of inspector of storehousemen. Examinations for appointment to the latter rank were abolished in 1908 on the ground that the particular qualifications required in an inspector of storehousemen are not such as can be tested by examination.
