HC Deb 04 December 1930 vol 245 cc2408-9W
Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Health whether his attention has again been recently drawn to the constant emission of dust and black smoke from the chimney of the Southern Railway carriage works at Lancing, Sussex; and, in view of the fact that a statutory notice for the abate- ment of this nuisance was served on the Southern Railway Company by the Steyning West Rural District Council in April last without any effect, whether his Department is prepared to take any action in the matter?

Mr. GREENWOOD

Yes, Sir. I received one complaint a fortnight ago. The district council inform me that on one occasion in October a heavy emission was observed and that the company state that this may have been due to the use of a particular consignment of coal which has since been discontinued. The council report that the observation for the last month shows the emission to have been negligible.
