HC Deb 15 April 1930 vol 237 c2746W
Mr. KELLY

asked the Minister of Labour whether her attention has been drawn to the importation of workers to the East Anglian district for the cultiva, tion of the sugar-beet crop; whether she is aware of the large number of regular farm workers who are unemployed in Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridge; and will she see to these farm workers having an opportunity for the work before this labour is imported?

Miss BONDFIELD

I have no compulsory powers in this matter, but arrangements are being made through the Exchanges with a view to giving local unemployed labour an opportunity of filling all vacancies which are notified by the farmers. The co-operation of the farmers is, of course, essential, and I am issuing a leaflet to them, calling attention to the facilities offered by the Exchanges.
