Mr. MACLEANasked the Minister of Agriculture whether his attention has been called to the growing practice of blending cheap foreign butter with British butter and selling the mixture as British; and whether any steps are being taken either to stop this practice or insist upon the blended product being properly described when offered for sale?
§ Dr. ADDISONThe practice of blending butter of different characteristics and origins is one of long standing. Generally these blends are sold under brand names and are not described as "British" but, if the hon. Member is aware of any case in which one of these blends is labelled "British," my right hon. Friend will be glad to have full1996W particulars in order that the position may be considered, with a view to a prosecution under the Merchandise Marks Act, 1887.
