HC Deb 31 October 1929 vol 231 cc342-3W
Colonel ENGLAND

asked the Minister of Health whether his Department is in possession of reliable information show- ing how many persons in Great Britain are living in overcrowded or insanitary dwellings; and, if not, whether he pro-poses to take steps to secure such information?

Mr. GREENWOOD

It is the statutory duty of every local authority to cause periodical inspections of their district to be made in order that they may deal with dwelling-houses found to be unfit or not reasonably fit for human habitation. A summary of the Re-ports of Medical Officers of Health for the year 1927, showing the number of houses inspected, the number found un-fit and other particulars will be found on page 68 of the Report of the Ministry of Health for the year 1928–29. Elaborate statistics with regard to overcrowding are contained in the Reports of the Census of 1921, to which I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend.
