HC Deb 13 November 1929 vol 231 c2063W
Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the estimate of £3,000,000 for the Zambesi Bridge includes any branch railways; what the total weight of exports from Nyasaland was in the last available year; and what is the estimated cost of the annual upkeep of the bridge and its approaches?

Mr. LUNN

An extension of the railway to Lake Nyasa is included in the scheme, but no branch lines. The export tonnage crossing by the Zambesi ferry in 1926 was 8,677. The maintenance of the bridge was not expected to be more than £3,000 a year, which will be increased to some extent under revised plans. I am unable to give a separate estimate of the upkeep of the railway approaches.
