HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 cc1744-5W
Sir K. WOOD

asked the Minister of Labour what applications have been made by the Woolwich borough council for assistance for schemes for the relief of unemployment under the Development (Loans and Guarantees) Act; what applications have been granted and subject to what conditions; and what is the estimate of the numbers of persons who will be so employed under them?

Miss BONDFIELD

The Woolwich Borough Council have submitted applications for assistance for schemes for the relief of unemployment under the Development (Loan Guarantees and Grants) Act in respect of the two following works:

  1. (1) Road widening scheme—estimated to give employment to the extent of 1,620 man months;
  2. (2) Work on Harrowfield Recreation Ground—estimated to give employment to the extent of 1,500 man months.

The Council have been informed that the applications fall to be considered on terms involving the employment of a proportion of labour transferred from depressed areas, which would include a proportion from certain of the London Boroughs where unemployment is heaviest.
