§ Sir F. THOMSONasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the nature of the land on which it is proposed to settle small holders at Luskentyre, Isle of Harris; and whether it is likely that a livelihood can be obtained from its cultivation?
Mr. ADAMSONLuskentyre is at present mainly a deer forest. The low ground is overrun with rabbits, and only 137 sheep and 34 cattle are carried on the whole of the estate. I am advised that after clearance and development the subjects are capable, in a few years' time, of carrying 80 cattle and a ewe stock of 500, and that, while the area capable of cultivation is limited, holdings can be formed which will prove acceptable to Harris applicants.
