HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 c1737W
Sir F. THOMSON

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the nature of the land on which it is proposed to settle small holders at Luskentyre, Isle of Harris; and whether it is likely that a livelihood can be obtained from its cultivation?

Mr. ADAMSON

Luskentyre is at present mainly a deer forest. The low ground is overrun with rabbits, and only 137 sheep and 34 cattle are carried on the whole of the estate. I am advised that after clearance and development the subjects are capable, in a few years' time, of carrying 80 cattle and a ewe stock of 500, and that, while the area capable of cultivation is limited, holdings can be formed which will prove acceptable to Harris applicants.
